Hello babes! I hope you are living your best life this week! I am back again to share some insight with you this week regarding makeup styles. It is all too often that someone sits in my chair and tells me they want “natural” makeup, but what they mean is they want me to utilize neutral tones; or they want a soft glam vs. full glam look; or they want a naked or no makeup look. See how the word natural can vary for literally everyone?! How am I, as an artist, to determine which variation of natural makeup you are actually wanting?!
Let me break it down for you, keep reading, babe!
Neutral makeup: Neutral makeup is simply utilizing neutral tones, such as browns or nudes to create a look and has no reference to application type or much product is actually being applied to the face. Neutral makeup can be utilized for Full Glam, Soft glam, and natural makeup!
Full Glam: This is the whole kit and caboodle, ladies. You want to look snatched and almost like a completely different person? Then, this is the type of makeup you want. With a full glam look, you’re going to get the winged liner, a more heavy contour and highlight galore, and a full coverage face. Then we’re going to top it off with some big old lashes (but not TOO big) and a sexy lined lip. Oh hey, Kim K, I see you.
Soft Glam: This is a step down from full glam but also a step above natural. Your makeup won’t contain the same harsh contour lines as full glam, and everything will be nicely blended and appear softer. With a soft glam look you’re going to get more of a smudged liner (as opposed to the wing); some contour and highlight; and a medium to full coverage face! This is the type of makeup I would highly recommend for many brides, especially if you’ve hired a professional photographer for the day!
Natural Makeup: This would be your daily routine makeup, but elevated! With natural makeup, you’re going to look like yourself! Your skin will be mostly covered with a tinted moisturizer, or sheer to medium coverage foundation. The eyes will showcase minimal eyeshadow (maybe 1-2 colors) and the face will appear to have a nice natural glow and color, by utilizing a little bronzer and/or blush. Natural makeup doesn’t usually include much contouring, so if you’re wanting more of a slightly snatched look- go with the soft glam, babe!
Naked/No makeup/Skin look: This type of look is exactly as it sounds. This is a VERY minimal look, designed to make it look like you are not wearing any makeup whatsoever. Skincare is key to this type of makeup application, as you want a nice healthy skin glow before you begin. With this application we’re utilizing a little concealer to minimize blemishes or under eye circles. Highlighter to add glow to the skin in certain areas, and very little mascara in a clear or brown shade. Brows would also be lightly groomed, and a sheer lip tint or balm would complete the look.
Now that you can clearly see what each makeup application entails, remember this next time you’re in that MUA’s chair! You can ask for a neutral look with all types of makeup. However, please babe, do not ask for a snatched, highlighted, winged liner “natural” look. 😉 If you do, we may internally roll our eyes, but we’ll still love you just the same.
